Formed by Guitarist Rik Mercaldi & Drummer Mike Roze in the mid 1990s playing an eclectic brand of Rock & Roll with influences ranging from '60s British Mod to '70's New York Punk as well as a penchant for live improvisation. After performing as a duo around NYC, bassist Mike Curry joined the band in time to record their first album, the self titled debut "The Subterraneans" in 1998 followed by a five song EP "5 Tracks".
The band has appeared on numerous compilations including a Dogs D'Amour Tribute titled "Bullet Proof Poems". Their last CD "Close To Real" was released in 2007. Since the departure of bassist Mike Curry, The Subterraneans were put on hiatus, and Rik Mercaldi & Mike Roze continued to work together in a variety of musical projects, including Rik's self titled solo release, a collection of acoustic based songs recorded and produced by Juano Lippi. Recently reactivated, they have just released "Lost", a new full length on Pyrrhic Victory Recordings (available on CD and digital download), and have begun playing some area shows as well.
